ON 22ND MARCH 1922 Ted married Ruth Anna (Annie) Heatherington at the Presbyterian Church in Cust, North Canterbury. They travelled down from Auckland so that Annie could share her special day with her only relatives in New Zealand.
Annie and Ted lost their first child, Roy Winslow Ashby, a few days after he was born in 1924. Partly to break away from that loss, they spent six months in Hawai'i and mainland USA in 1925. Noel was born to them on 20th December, 1927 when Annie was in her 46th year. In 1929 they planned to return to the USA where Ted had been offered a teaching post in Oakland, California. However those were the depression years and they were unable to sell either of their two houses. One (mother's at No.52) eventually sold, and they moved into my Dad's house (No.73) across the road.\ Annie died from a stroke on 14th November, 1940, when Noel was twelve. It was a devestating loss for both Ted and Noel.
Four years later Ted Married Christina Margaret Peach, a registered nurse whom he hd met through old friends. Both marriages were very happy ones, and Christina ("Teenie") who was only ten years older than Noel, became his much loved stepmother. Ted died in 1970, aged 85 Teenie became the Matron of the Roskill Masonic Village (a large retirement home) She eventually retired herself to a unit overlooking Cornwall Park, Some years later she moved to Northbridge Retirement Village in North Shore City.where she owns a lovely unit with panoramic views over the Waitemata Harbour to Auckland City. |
